One of the assignments in PSYCH 490 this term asks students to give a paper a grade for whether the paper meets as set of emerging standards for replication. In grading these assignments, I learned that one student decided to evaluate one of my own papers.
Let’s just say that my first reaction, was “oh, my.” But my second reaction was “awesome.”
The student was more generous than I think I would have been. But the student also highlighted things that I had honestly forgotten, like the fact that we had shared data and code. And the student assignment gave me a chance to walk down memory lane about that project. It has been cited 15 times, and viewed more than 2,500 times.
Garrison Keillor used to say, “be well, do good work, and keep in touch.” I’m proud of the paper even if I’m not doing much related to that topic right now. One student’s bravado gave me a chance to remember that.
